Dr. Chandrawat’s lab is working on the following research project:

INSTIGATION ON FLAX SEED COMPONENTS AND VALUE ADDED FORMULATION WITH REFERENCE TO THEIR CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE.

Introduction: -

The flax plant (Iinium usitattisimum) has benefitted humanity for times immemorial. Its fibre has been a rich resource for manufacturing linen textiles. Oil derived from its seeds had been a liquid of choice for varnish and lacquer compositions. Recently it has been established that flax seed oil is the richest vegetable source of alpha- Linolenic acid (ALA) - the plant based omega -3-fatty acid which is essential to our health. The plant is valued for its textile fibre components stem, dietary fibre, proteins, mucilage and other health care components (from seeds). However the miracle lies within its seeds rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignin contents. These are potential factors in reducing risk of heart disease/stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disease and almost all types of informatory conditions.

Objectives: -

Looking towards the scope of the investigation in global health care, the principal investigators have focused on this field of research with an integrated approach to the following areas:

1.       Characterizations of various components in flax seeds

2.       Pre-clinical & Clinical studies

3.       Supplementary materials and their formulation for better safety & efficacy

4.       Investigations on Biosynthesis promoters (enzymes, bio-molecules etc.)

5.       Synthetic approach

6.       Investigation on cost effectiveness (flax seeds and their viability estimates).
